About The Treatment
What do I offer you?
My clinic is a relaxed home environment. It is sunny, casual, and comfortable. It is easy to find and easy to park. I accept HealthPartners Insurance and am happy to provide receipts for other insurance claims.
What happens at the appointment?
Your appointment will last one hour. Each appointment consists of an intake, which includes analysis of your pulse and tongue and discussion of your health. You will lie on a massage table or sit comfortably in a chair while the needles are inserted. I use only very fine surgical steel needles. They are sterile until opened and are used only one time. After your treatment, they are removed and recycled in a sharps container. I am gentle and use a very fine gauge of needle. Once the needles are positioned in your body, you will feel relaxed as endorphins release and your sense of wellbeing increases. Most people fall asleep or have deep relaxation at this time. The needles are left in place for 20-40 minutes.
Herbs
You may want to use herbal medicine. We will discuss your condition and medications that you are taking to evaluate if herbs are a good choice for you. I am a trained herbalist and can provide the herbs that you need.
What else?
Sometimes I use cupping, electro stimulation, herbal plasters and ointments, tuning forks, tui na massage, or other techniques. We decide as part of the ongoing intake and evaluation process whether the addition of any therapies will benefit you.
Fees
I do not accept credit cards. Cash or checks please. My fee is $60.00 for a one hour appointment. I am a HealthPartners provider and can bill them directly. You will need to pay only your co-pay. Check with your insurance to see if acupuncture is covered. If you have insurance other than HealthPartners that includes acupuncture coverage, I will give you a receipt that you can submit to be reimbursed.
How does acupuncture work?
A good diagnosis by your acupuncturist is the key factor to a good treatment. That is why it is important to go to someone who has graduated from an acupuncture school, has passed the NCCAOM (National Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine) board exams, and continues to study acupuncture diagnostics and theories. Education and experience help your acupuncturist get to the root of your problems. In Minnesota and some other states, medical doctors and chiropractors are not required to get an education in Oriental Medicine. They can perform acupuncture with very little training. Be sure to look for the L.Ac. title for acupuncturists in Minnesota. This title reassures you that the practitioner you choose is licensed with the medical board and has the knowledge that you deserve.

Diagnosis is complicated and involves looking, listening, pulse taking, diagnosing the tongue, and analyzing the information you provide about your mental and physical state. All of the information fits together and is analyzed by your acupuncturist to find the cause of your concerns. At my clinic you will get what is called a root and branch treatment. I work to find what is causing the problem (root) and treat that along with your complaints (branches).

The theories of acupuncture are complex and fascinating. These theories involve meridians that flow along your body. Energy or qi flows all around you and through these meridians. When the qi is blocked or not flowing properly, trouble ensues.

Acupuncture can work as preventative medicine or work on problems that already exist. Early treatment is more likely to clear up a problem and make it go away. Severe and chronic problems benefit from acupuncture but may not go away completely. Some people have immediate results that last and some need successive treatments to feel a gradual improvement. How you respond is unique to you but is affected by your age, your state of health, the severity or chronic nature of your condition, and how long you have had the problem. For example, a healthy 18-year-old that has had tennis elbow for two weeks is likely to respond quickly and need very few treatments. A person that is 60 and has had health issues and migraine headaches for 40 years will most likely need to have a series of treatments to know if acupuncture will help.
Acupuncture is used for many conditions and disorders, including:
  • Allergies, colds, and asthma.
  • Digestive disorders of all types.
  • Pain of all types including fibromyalgia, arthritis, headaches, neck pain, TMJ, back pain, and sciatica.
  • Mental, emotional issues such as depression, anxiety, and stress.
  • Women’s issues of all types including infertility, menstrual pain and disorders, and menopause.
  • Fatigue and low energy.
  • Acupuncture can help with your overall health and symptoms if you have diabetes, hypertension, MS, cancer, and other serious conditions.
What conditions have I treated the most?
I have treated all of the disorders I listed above successfully. For many years, I have had the good fortune to see many patients each week in a variety of settings and locations. I see patients while working with students at the acupuncture school teaching clinic, I work at my private clinic, and I work at the Woodwinds Natural Care Center. In the past, I have worked at chiropractic clinics and other acupuncture clinics. All of these experiences have allowed me to treat a multitude of health issues and patients of all ages.
Do I treat children?
Yes! I love working with children and specialize in treating them. I have an extensive music background teaching children from infancy to teens and use these skills and experience in my practice.
Acupuncture works. It has worked for thousands of years. Exactly why it works is hard to explain, but it has a long proven history in China and other countries. Those magical needles coax your body into a better state of health and well being. Acupuncture is relaxing and enjoyable.
